Description

Do your students have trouble with fractions? Looking for a fun activity to do with your class? Here is an easy activity that will be a change from the usual worksheet.

Directions: Print out the colored fraction bars for each student. The students will then cut them into smaller pieces and sort them by color or by denominator. Following the instructions on the page, they will find physical pieces of fractions that are equivalent. For example they could hold up 3 of the 1/6 pieces and show that it would be the same size as the 1/2 piece. All of the pieces are designed to create the same length to avoid confusion.

I created this lesson as a cheap alternative to purchasing expensive fraction bars from the educational companies. I also included a black and white version on the last page that the students can color in themselves. This can be used if color printing is not available or to save money.

If you find this activity useful I would appreciate any positive feedback you would be willing to leave!

Happy Teaching!

My students are able to use this as a reference as they use the actual fraction bars. This has helped them to be able to visualize fractions even better.

My students enjoyed working with these. They made little pockets to keep them in their interactive notebooks. Great resource. Thank you!
