Description

This is a STEM engineering project with a fun nursery rhyme twist. Create a spider trap for Little Miss Muffet that uses at least one simple machine! This activity is designed to encourage critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills, as well as, problem solving and teamwork. This project makes a great wrap up for your simple machines unit, and you can also use it when learning about Rube Goldberg machines.

Don't be fooled by "Nursery Rhyme!" These activities are designed for grades 3-5. Students will get a kick out of the twist on well-known nursery rhymes.

Perfect for Halloween time, too! There's not a mention of Halloween, but the spider theme fits with the holiday.

Included:
-Student recording sheets (four options)
-copy of the rhyme
-grading rubric
-parent letter
-extension menu
-detailed notes to teacher
-printable spider target
-copy of the poem
-materials request note to parents

Additional resources you will need:
-variety of building materials (lids, plastic containers, string, paper cups, paper clips, pipe cleaners, straws, clothespins, popsicle sticks or whatever you can find!)

It can be completed in one class period of an hour or less. Great for use in a STEM or gifted classroom!

Students loved it! Great follow up to a simple machines unit. I did it with my fourth grade gen ed STREAM class and will be doing it with my third grade classes after our unit on force, having them explain their inventions with content vocabulary.
