This resource was created to complement the Ontario Curriculum Grade 2 Science and Technology strand;

UNDERSTANDING STRUCTURES AND MECHANISMS; MOVEMENT

- Most expectations for this strand are covered and are stated at the top of the page to help guide your lessons.

Learning Goals and Success Criteria posters are included to support this resource; 3 Learning Goals, each with 2-3 Success Criteria. Colour-coded for easy organization.

☼ Interactive Notebook Activity • Differentiated ☼

• Choose between 3 different options for an interactive notebook activity for each simple machine. The task increases in difficulty allowing for differentiation.

• Option 1: Pre-organized pages (1 per simple machine). Add to science notebooks and identify each object. Word Bank is included to help with this task.

• Option 2: Cut and glue the examples onto each flap of the interactive notebook page. Identify each object under the flap and tell why it's used.

• Option 3: Cut and glue the correct examples onto each flap of the interactive notebook page. Identify each object under the flap and tell why it's useful.

☼ Summary Page ☼

• All simple machines (names and picture) on the same page for quick and easy review!

☼ Posters ☼

• Black & White full page posters (1 per simple machine) with an example and a short description.

• These can be added to student notebooks as you introduce each simple machine.

• These also look great photocopied onto different colours of bright paper for your science center or bulletin board!

☼ My Bicycle ☼

• Discover all the simple machines that make up your bike! 2 options; pre-organized for notebooks and interactive (cut and glue the labels onto the page)

☼ Simple Machines in Daily Life ☼

• Consider the advantages of having simple machines in our daily lives. 16 real-life situations (4 pages) where students will identify the simple machine(s) used, how it is used, and the advantage(s) to having it. Students will consider the following;

- Moving a refrigerator up a flight of stairs (inclined plane, pulley)
- Travelling a far distance (wheel and axle)
- Construction zone (wedge, lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane, gear, pulley)
- Building a treehouse (screw, lever)
- Playing a keyboard / piano (lever)
- Cutting a pizza (wheel and axle)
- Riding a skateboard (lever, wheel and axle)
- Using a see-saw (lever)
- Going down a slide (inclined plane)
- Blender, toaster / kitchen appliances (gear, lever)
- Airplane (screw, wheel and axle, gear)
- Wheelchair (wheel and axle, inclined plane)
- Roller coaster (inclined plane, gear)
- School bus (wheel and axle, lever, gear)
- Cutting a ham / roast (wedge)
- Skateboard park / ramp (inclined plane)

☼ Culminating Activity • Project ☼

• Student handout stating the culminating activity; to design, build, and test a mechanism that includes one or more simple machines.

• Guiding questions are included to help students focus their project and help with their presentation.

• Rubric is included
