Description

Radical Expressions - Simplify, Add, Subtract, Multiply: This Lesson bundle includes a completely editable and animated PPT lesson that provides EVERYTHING needed to teach students how to simplify radical expressions and add, subtract, and multiply radical expressions. I start the lesson going over exactly what a radical is and how they are inversely related to exponents. I go over how to estimate the value of an irrational square root using the two closest square roots because many of my students do not remember this from middle school. The lesson goes over how to simplify numerical, variable, and mixed radical expressions. How to add and subtract radical expressions and how to multiply radical expressions. I include the square of binomial and sum and difference patterns in multiplying radical expressions to reinforce these essential patterns. The lesson includes numerous fully worked examples with each step shown and explained. There is also a practice slide intended to remain up while the students check their understanding. The answers are shown on the next slide. There is also a 3-page worksheet (PDF & Digital versions included) and key.

Worksheet includes a PDF version and a Digital (editable) Version

The Video Preview is just a SHORT example of the content and animation of the lesson so you can gauge my work.

The PowerPoint Lesson Contains:

  • Review: Definition of a square root and how radical expressions relate to exponential expressions
  • Review of how to estimate irrational square roots by using the two closest perfect squares above and below
  • Step-by-step explanation of how to simplify radical expressions
  • 12 fully worked examples of simplifying radical expressions
  • Step-by-step explanation of how to add and subtract radical expressions
  • 3 fully worked examples of adding and subtracting radical expressions
  • Step-by-step explanation of how to multiply radical expressions
  • 4 fully worked examples of multiplying radical expressions
  • A practice slide with 3 problems for students to assess their understanding of simplifying, adding, subtracting, and multiplying radical equations (answers appear on next slide)

The worksheet includes:

  • 16 simplifying radical expression problems
  • 16 adding/subtracting radical expression problems
  • 16 multiplying radical expression problems
  • Key is included
