Description

This set of 6th grade math binder notes provides an organized set of notes and practice problems for simplifying algebraic expressions by combining like terms. Students are first guided through the definition and several examples of like terms. Next, they are given the process of simplifying an algebraic expression with some guided practice. The rest of the sheet provides 18 additional practice problems to use as further guided practice or independent class work. Note: These problems do not include the use of the distributive property.

This assignment works great to guide direct instruction, in a small group center, or intervention group.

These notes work great during guided instruction, small groups, reteaching, or review before an assessment.

This was a clear and helpful resource for simplifying algebraic expressions in 6th grade math. The binder notes were well organized and made it easy for students to follow the steps and understand the process. I liked that it supported direct instruction and gave students structured notes they could refer back to. It worked well for whole group lessons, small groups, and review. Overall, this is a strong resource for building confidence with simplifying expressions. Highly recommend!

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + š˜¹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3š˜¹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24š˜¹ + 18š˜ŗ to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4š˜¹ + 3š˜ŗ); apply properties of operations to š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ to produce the equivalent expression 3š˜ŗ.
Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ + š˜ŗ and 3š˜ŗ are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number š˜ŗ stands for.
