Description

Guided notes with 16 examples and 24 practice problems to teach students to simplify, multiply, and divide rational expressions. There is also a separate review worksheet with 10 problems, and two versions of a quiz with 4 problems each. For the review worksheet, I have two answer keys: one with just the odd problems, and one with solutions to all the problems. I like to let them see the odds only while they work so they can check as they go along, but then keep them accountable for the evens until we check in class the next day.

I use this with Big Ideas Math (Larson and Boswell) Chapter 7-3, but it can also be used with any other textbook or as a stand-alone lesson.

Student handouts are uploaded in pdf and word format for ease of printing and editing.

Handwritten answer keys provided for both the notes and the worksheets.

Rewrite simple rational expressions in different forms; write 𝘒(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹) in the form 𝘲(𝘹) + 𝘳(𝘹)/𝘣(𝘹), where 𝘒(𝘹), 𝘣(𝘹), 𝘲(𝘹), and 𝘳(𝘹) are polynomials with the degree of 𝘳(𝘹) less than the degree of 𝘣(𝘹), using inspection, long division, or, for the more complicated examples, a computer algebra system.
Understand that rational expressions form a system analogous to the rational numbers, closed under addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by a nonzero rational expression; add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions.
