Simplify vs Solve | Interactive Notebook Notes + Practice Foldable

Every year my 8th graders get crazy worried when they start seeing the word 'simplify' everywhere. "Does it just mean solve?" they ask me. "Well... kind of...in the way YOU'RE thinking that solve means..." And then I try to explain it to each kid when they individually express their concern about it.

This year I decided to do a pre-emptive strike on the whole simplifying vs solving dilemma, and I created a whole lesson around the topic. This foldable worked fantastically at getting them to see the difference between the two right away, and now no one worriedly asks me what simplify means on their quizzes.

This is a simple, single-fold foldable great for interactive notebooks or math journals. I have students get together in groups and give one student control over the answer key. They discuss the front page, making sure everyone understands the difference between expressions and equations, simplifying and solving, then begin working on the problems on the inside.

What is an interactive notebook?

Interactive notebooks are a great way for students to keep notes and practice examples in an organized way.

What is included?

This is a one page foldable I give to my students to introduce them to the differences between expressions and equations, simplifying and solving. The front page shows examples of simplifying expressions and solving equations. The middle of the foldable gives students room for ten practice problems.

How do I use this?

First thing you want to do is print it with the "print on short side" and "print double sided" settings. These may have different names depending on your printer. Makes sure to just print pages 1-2 for students, as pages 3-4 have the answers. You should end up with one page, printed on both sides. Fold the page "hamburger" style to resemble a book, and have students glue down the blank side into their math journals.

Enjoy!
