Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

Description

PowerPoint lesson on simplifying algebraic expressions. Includes two note pages as well. I split this lesson into two days and have done so in the PowerPoint, but the lesson can be combined into one day if you are dealing with a more accelerated class. Both days are included in this PowerPoint with both having their own individual warm up and whiteboard review practice at the end. Day one includes combining like terms, with and without distribution, and has some fractions and decimals. I use highlighters to color code each term so they have a better visualization of what is happening. Day two includes distributing a negative between two expressions in parentheses and factoring out a greatest common factor or working in reverse order using a Venn diagram. Day two's whiteboards includes practice on problems from day 2 as well as more problems from day 1. My PowerPoints are completely editable so please change them to suit your needs. Please feel free to let me know if I can assist you in any way or if you ever encounter any problems with my PowerPoints.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, 𝘢 + 0.05𝘢 = 1.05𝘢 means that “increase by 5%” is the same as “multiply by 1.05.”
