Description

Simplifying radicals (irrational square roots) with variables has never been so easy! With this editable and print-and-go lesson, students investigate patterns to discover properties of square roots and apply them to simplify various radical expressions with variables. One of the most important topics in Algebra 1 is radicals, and this lesson provides students with the foundation they need to excel at simplifying irrational square roots with variables to prepare them for higher level mathematics.

The scaffolded notes break down simplifying radicals with variables into easy-to-understand segments, and the accompanying worksheet gives students ample opportunities to gain confidence and apply their new skills through independent practice with a variety of problems. Answer keys with step-by-step solutions are included, too!

You also receive a video lesson that corresponds directly with the guided notes. The video is ideal for days when you need a sub but still want your students to learn the content and stay on track while you're gone. It can also be used for a flipped classroom and for additional reinforcement outside of class.

Students especially enjoy this editable, low-prep lesson when paired with individual whiteboards for quick, formative assessment.

With this Simplifying Radicals with Variables lesson, your students will learn:

  • Which powers are perfect squares and why
  • How to simplify radical expressions with variables
  • How to multiply radical expressions and simplify them

What’s included?

  • Simplifying Radicals with Variables Notes and Practice (PDF and EDITABLE PPT)
  • Reference charts for perfect squares and square roots
  • Video lesson
  • Fully worked answer keys

Why will you and your students love this lesson?

  • Guided notes make teaching easier — no more starting from scratch! Just project or print and teach.
  • Perfect for direct instruction or independent learning — helps all learners follow along at their own pace.
  • Promotes deep understanding of simplifying radicals rather than memorizing steps.
  • Reduces frustration for students who struggle with abstract algebra concepts by breaking down each step visually.
  • Editable and versatile — customize for your class, use digitally or on paper.
  • Saves valuable prep time while providing a high-quality, classroom-tested lesson.

Students must have a solid understanding of simplifying irrational radicals before completing this lesson.
