Description

Collaborative grouping instruction doesn't have to be a challenge.

This professional development video course and accompanying downloads will get your small group instruction off to a great start if you are a new teacher, or help you refine your practice if you are an experienced teacher.

We all know collaborative groups are an important pedagogical tool, but how do we do them correctly?

How do we choose the best methods for them?

How do we know when to use them and when another method is more appropriate?

What are the best practices for them, and how can teachers and administrators have confidence they're doing it "right"?

These answers and more!

Welcome to Best Practices in Small Group Instruction!

This professional development opportunity shares through video (accompanied by downloadable, printable handouts) everything teachers need to know to get their small group instruction set up for success!

The Full Course

This is a four-part course on small group instruction led by Lisa Van Gemert, M.Ed.T., an internationally known speaker and author. An educator with decades of experience, Lisa shares best practices in teaching with fellow educators around the world.

This course consists of four sections, each of which can be taken independently. The parts function as stand-alone mini-courses (although we're pretty sure you'll want to watch them all!).

Part 1: The Decision Process
How can teachers know when to use small groups and when to avoid them? This section focuses on the pedagogical decision-making process, leading teachers to choose group size with focused intent and strong rationale.
Small Group Instruction: Professional Development Video Part 1

Part 2: Teaching the Skills
What are the skills students need to work effectively in small groups, and how can teachers best teach these skills?
Small Group Instruction | Professional Development Video Course Part 2

Part 3: Roles & Responsibilities
Learn how to divide students into groups effectively, and how to help the students manage their groups with ease.
Small Group Instruction | Professional Development Video Part 3

Part 4: Collaborative Testing (This part)
Learn how to administer collaborative assessments (and why you should). Complete with three examples and grading practices, this section of the course stretches small group pedagogy to the limit!

The course downloads include a certificate for professional development, pending the approval of your principal. It is estimated that the entire course, including all four parts, will take 60 minutes of video watching and 60 minutes of reading the accompanying ancillary materials. While the combined video content is more than 60 minutes, the amount of video combined with reading is fully balanced.
