Thank you for visiting my store!
This SmartBoard lesson is a great way to get students to write and identify topic sentences. There are 15 total slides with many opportunities to practice the skill, so it takes me 2 language arts periods to teach this.
The lesson begins with sample topic sentences that are not well written; students discuss what is wrong with them and how they can make them better. Next, there are a few examples of groups of sentences where students need to find which sentence would be the topic sentence and which would be the details.
After identifying the topic sentence, students will practice writing the topic. The hamburger graphic organizer is used to correctly write a paragraph (topic sentence, details, concluding sentence). There are 2 modeling slides and 6 additional slides for practice.
Lastly, there is a Closure/Assessment where students will read a short paragraph and identify parts of the paragraph as either a topic sentence or a detail.
