Description
I've found success using repetition and choices as a supportive way of targeting echolalia!
Story time! I serviced a student who could not spontaneously speak nor fill in answers to questions. She could read and understand question but would repeat what you said. I created this resource during the pandemic for virtual learning but in-person works really as as kids are electronically inclined! When provided a visual script with options of answers, she flourished! We started with a combination of prompts such as the visual slides, my verbal prompts and using the cursor as a prompt. In time, I began removing prompts one_by_one until I was able to switch slides and she initiated scripts on her own. She eventually was able to expound and the echolalia began diminishing. After several months, echolalia was not present or very minimal during our interactions nor class. She began raising her hand and answering questions in class as well! Start with closed ended questions as baseline to build on until student graduates to open ended questions, elaborating more. Slideshow is editable so please feel free to change the multiple choices and tailor this to your student's needs!
*Tips:
- Review these scripts consistently to track data on progress
- When ready, incorporate a student with typical receptive/expressive language development for Level II interactions
- Be patient and praise for even the small noticings!
