Description
If you are trying to integrate an international flair into your science and math curriculum, solar ovens are a great place to start. This 21st Century Math Project helps you get there. Students will design, build, test, and present a solar oven design with the objective of heating a hot dog the hottest. This is a hands-on STEM project for hands-on students. This works great when integrated scatterplots, best-fit functions, with energy. There are plenty of great opportunities to extend this learning into the humanities as well! Temperature probes with TI's work great! Any will do.
In this document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, and handout resources for students to use. ***THIS PRODUCT HAS BEEN UPDATED WITH A GOOGLE SLIDES INTERACTIVE VERSION INCLUDED. REDOWNLOAD IF YOU HAVE IT ALREADY***
-- In "Solar Oven: Modeling Practice", students analyze the data of two solar ovens, construct mathematical models and draw conclusions.
-- In "The Design", students will design a sketch and create a material list for a solar oven.
-- to conclusion "Solar Oven" students will test their ovens outside, track the temperature and use the data to construct mathematical models.
Of course I did not invent the idea of the Solar Oven, but I have extended it into my Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and PreCalculus classrooms.
