Description

This Solving Equations Match-Up Activity takes building equations to the next step! Students will sort out the Ice Cream Scoops to build their Equations using 3 Sets, easy, medium and difficult! Students will be able to reinforce their skills working with one and two step equations with distribution, variables on both sides, fractions and negatives. This is a perfect way to implement differentiation of instruction into your small groups or center activities.

Each set includes Ten Ice Cream Cones to build (making 30 problems total!).

For each Ice Cream Cone there is a:

• 1-Solution (Whipped Cream)

• 2-Two Step Equations w/ distribution (Two Ice Cream Scoops)

• 1-One Step Equation (Cone)

Don't let the learning stop there!

Move into an independent worksheet post this hands-on activity allowing students to really demonstrate understanding by matching Equivalent Equations. Students will match a set of one and two step equations together and lead into writing their own equivalent equations! Finally, end this wonderful activity with a challenging Exit Ticket using their knowledge of writing a two step equation to represent a real-life situation.

Common Core Aligned: 7.EE.B.1, 7.EE.B.2, 7.EE.B.3 and 7.EE.B.4

This would be a perfect center, small group or paired activity! Check out my other engaging and rigorous activities covering Expressions and Equations!

-Enjoy!

Other Math Games and Center Ideas

One and Two Step Equation Paired Puzzle

Looking for a way to implement small groups or pairs into your lesson plans? . Students will be able to reinforce their skills working with all four inverse operations to solve for the unknown variable.

Inequalities JENGA Game

Great way to practice solving for variables, graphing on number lines and combining like terms. Use Inequalities JENGA in a small group activity or MATH Center.

This was a great extension activity for my resource class! Due to being separated from their partners, they had to do a lot of communication and use an abundance of academic lingo. I can't wait to do this again next year.

I really enjoyed the matching. I pulled this as a higher-level activity for my 5th graders and it is challenging for them. Thank you!

This ended up not as challenging as I thought. I would have liked to have the steps scrambled up so that the students did not just automatically place the ice cream int he correct spots without really processing the equation steps. It was not bad, just not what I really needed for my class at that point.

I hope that you pre-cut and mixed up the problems and solutions, this would prevent your students from being able to match up each step and further the processing skills required. In each level (3 levels) there are 40 items (120 items total) that need to be matched-up, all of them have the same variable as well to increase the difficulty - I'm not positive you used the activity in the manner it was suppose to be. I'm sorry you didn't find it challenging enough even though it includes fractional coefficients and variables on both sides. Did you happen to use the extension activity or the exit slip included?

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, 𝘢 + 0.05𝘢 = 1.05𝘢 means that “increase by 5%” is the same as “multiply by 1.05.”
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
