Description

With Solving Equation in One Variable - Relay Race, is an activity where students work collaboratively to complete 4 problems of varying difficulty. There are a total of 32 problems, for up to 8 groups and 4 problems per group. Each student will complete their own problem, once each student does so then the next student in their group begins the next problem. First group to complete all 4 problems wins! Although this is designed for a relay race, you can use the problem set in a variety of ways: practice, scavenger hunt, task cards, assessment, etc. My students love relay races and it gets really competitive. It’s a nice way to break apart from worksheets and practicing via textbook. Students will solve one-step, two-step and multi-step equations. This activity and topic is for students in Math 7, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, or Algebra 2.

Students love a good bit of competition. It keeps them on their toes and they love showing if they can grasp a concept faster than their peers. This activity was a huge success. Love it

This was a challenge for my students to complete as a sub day activity, but it was competitive enough that they were able to complete it.

Another one that looks great but ran out of time and did not use it. Maybe later this year I can have them do it.

Solve linear equations in one variable.
Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form 𝘹 = 𝘒, 𝘒 = 𝘒, or 𝘒 = 𝘣 results (where 𝘒 and 𝘣 are different numbers).
Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
