Solving Multistep Problems with Rational Numbers (Lesson Plan Package)
Share

Description

This package includes three lesson plans focusing on solving multistep problems with rational numbers and estimation. Each lesson plan uses animation as the springboard into an activity. While I include the Mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), all lessons are written to be used with matching state and national standards that include real-world applications. However, the activity in the third lesson specifically investigates Georgia businesses and industries.

The first lesson targets students that may need extra support. It includes additional practice problems for each skill, verbal and nonverbal praise cues, practice, and a gallery walk assessment. The second lesson focuses on practice with a career exploration. It includes 16 careers to explore with related math questions. Students give the class a presentation based on their findings regarding the career or industry along with their findings. The third lesson focuses on specific companies in Georgia. Students act as representatives for the companies and create pitch presentations to investors. Over 100 additional questions, prompts, and problems are included. Almost 40 real-world application situations are included as well! Explore real-world problems from almost two dozen companies, industries, and jobs!

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. For example: If a woman making $25 an hour gets a 10% raise, she will make an additional 1/10 of her salary an hour, or $2.50, for a new salary of $27.50. If you want to place a towel bar 9 3/4 inches long in the center of a door that is 27 1/2 inches wide, you will need to place the bar about 9 inches from each edge; this estimate can be used as a check on the exact computation.
