Solving Quadratic Equations Using the Square Root Property – Master Level Scavenger Hunt (Algebra 1 & 2, Grades 8–11)

Help your students master solving quadratic equations using the square root property with this engaging scavenger hunt activity! Designed for Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students (grades 8–11), this master-level resource challenges learners to solve quadratic equations where not all square roots are perfect squares. Two differentiated versions are included—one with answers in simplest radical form and another with solutions rounded to the nearest hundredth. All solutions are real numbers.

This interactive activity gets students up and moving while reinforcing their understanding of square root equations. It’s perfect for practice, review, bell work, or math stations—and it’s an excellent way to bring movement and engagement into your algebra lessons.

Why Teachers Love This Resource

This printable scavenger hunt combines conceptual understanding with physical engagement. Students solve each quadratic equation, find the matching answer around the room, and continue until they loop back to where they started—making it a self-checking, active learning experience.

What’s Included

Two versions of the activity:

  • 12-card “walk-around” scavenger hunt – full set for classroom movement
    • Includes a printable absent student page for easy makeup work
  • 6-card shorter version – perfect for table work, bell work, or quick review

2 student answer sheets:

  • One with space to show work
  • One with answer boxes only

Complete teacher directions for setup and classroom management

Detailed Answer key with all problems worked out.

Implementation Tips & Differentiation

  • Print the shorter version on colored paper to easily track materials and prevent mix-ups.
  • Keep a few absent student pages ready for homework or make-up assignments.
  • For large classes, use the tabletop version to create a small-group activity (2–4 students per group).

Possible Uses

Students love scavenger hunts but it never ceases to amaze me that someone is always confused by them. I appreciate that the answers from another problem were labeled. I wish the answers were on the top of the page and the problem on the bottom just so it is a more natural progression for the paper.
