Description

Problem Expert Activities are a wonderful way to make sure each student in your class receives individual attention and feels empowered. It's also a great way to have shy students work with others in a way that is not too overwhelming.

To begin, you give each student a problem necklace (or if your students are too cool to wear these necklaces, they can just have the card) and the worksheet to record their answers. Each necklace has a problem on the front and the answer to that problem on the back. Individually, the students are to complete their problem and make sure they understand it (because they will be helping the other students solve that problem).

You can either laminate, hole punch, and string each card to make them necklaces. OR purchase a set of 30 lanyards that will hold the cards. Each card is 2.5" by 3".

For the next phase, students will find a partner and complete each other's problem. If a student is struggling, their partner will help them. Once each of the two students have completed each other's problems, they find a new partner to work with. This continues until the end of class or until the students complete all the problems.

Each Problem Expert Activity includes 30 problems.

**Notes: I do not include directions of which way the students are to solve the equations...I will leave that up to you. Students can use factoring, the quadratic formula, or completing the square.

Tips and Tricks:

  • If you have an odd number of students, feel free to act as one of the students and wear a necklace too!
  • Encourage the students to wear the necklaces. I found that they are less likely to leave their problem behind or accidentally switch it with another student if they are wearing it around their neck.
  • If you have more cards that students, you have a few options:
    • Set the extra cards off to the side, and early finishers can work on those individually.
    • Only use as many cards as there are students.
    • Give some students two cards.

  • Laminate! I laminate everything so that I have it forever.
