Description

This editable, ready-to-go lesson will help your middle school math and Algebra 1 students master how to solve systems of linear equations using the substitution method. Students will learn and understand how to identify what variables to isolate, manipulate the equations to isolate the chosen variable, and find the solution that satisfies both equations in the system. The systems of equations in the notes and practice are scaffolded to increase gradually in difficulty as students improve their understanding.

The guided notes break down solving systems of equations with substitution into easy-to-understand segments with clear explanations and step-by-step examples, and the accompanying worksheet gives students ample opportunities to gain confidence and apply their new skills through independent practice with a variety of problems.  Students especially enjoy this editable, low-prep lesson when paired with individual whiteboards for quick, formative assessment.

This lesson covers solving linear systems of equations with substitution when:

  • Both equations have an isolated variable
  • One equation has an isolated variable
  • Neither equation has an isolated variable and students must analyze strategies for knowing which variable is easier to isolate

Students will also practice checking that the solutions they find algebraically satisfy both equations in the system.

What’s included?

Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Understand that solutions to a system of two linear equations in two variables correspond to points of intersection of their graphs, because points of intersection satisfy both equations simultaneously.
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
