Most of the students I work with have some difficulties with word problems. Many of them will not even attempt to read the problems and think about the information before they ask for help. This bundle includes four documents; with the Operation Words Sort, students learn basic operation words. They cut up the cards, write the matching operations on the back, write the four operations on a white board, and sort the cards under the correct categories. Once students master these vocabulary terms, teach the "CUBES" strategy for approaching a word problem, which is outlined on the note sheet, with several simple word problems for students to practice with. Once students are comfortable approaching and reading word problems, you can try more difficult problems. This strategy encourages students to self-motivate and closely read. Also included is an assessment sheet kids can use as well as a graph for charting progress.
