Sound boxes or, Elkonin boxes, build phonological awareness skills by segmenting words into individual sounds, or phonemes. To use Elkonin boxes, a child listens to a word and moves a token into a box for each sound or phoneme. This is of great help to the early reader and struggling reader before reading. It teaches the learner to hear the individual sounds. This is a critical first step in learning to read and write.
