Description
I created this PowerPoint as an Oral Practice Activity and Vocabulary Review. This resource was designed for units where students are learning to describe themselves and others using vocabulary for physical appearance and characteristics of personality. I have also embedded opportunities for mini-lessons that support Spanish Grammar and aspects of Latin American history.
This PowerPoint contains 27 slides; 1 title slide, 2 instruction slides (in Spanish), 1 example slide, 22 slides with photos of Latin American and U.S. politicians (current, former, and historical), and 1 blank slide to mark the end of the presentation.
The simple goal of this PowerPoint is to provide students with visual prompts that they can use to practice describing others. The specific images could have been celebrities, artists, random people, etc. I chose to use presidents and governors in order to expose my classes to historical figures and perhaps to spark mini-lessons and side conversations related to Latin American History and its relationship with the United States.
The specific individuals featured are: Fidel Castro, Felipe VI, Rey de España, Mauricio Macri, Evo Morales, Sebastián Piñera, Iván Duque Márquez, Luis Guillermo Solis, Lenin Moreno, Nayib Bukele, Jimmy Morales, Juan Orlando Hernandez, Enrique Peña NIeto, Violeta Chamorro, Laurentino Cortizo, Mario Abdo Benitez, Alejandro Garcia-Padilla, Danilo Medina, Luis Lacalle Pou, Juan Gaidó, Martín Vizcarra, Eva Peron, John F. Kennedy, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
I understand that some of the political figures may be controversial for some teachers or students therefore, as purchaser, you are capable of deleting any slides that you prefer not to use or you can simply limit the class discussion to only physical descriptions.
My suggestions for mini-lessons include:
* Slides 1-2 Review "cognates" and have students collaborate in pairs to translate the instructions. Prior to beginning the activity, students can share their translations of the instructions with the class.
*Slides 1-2 Introduce or review "Informal affirmative commands"
*Slide 4 Review the uses and distinctions of "ser" and "tener" when describing others
*Slide 5 Provide an overview of the Spanish Monarchy (some students may not know that Spain still has a King)
*Slide 5 For Honors and advanced students, prior to the lesson, have them research and prepare a short oral summary of the Spanish monarchy to be presented to the class
*Slide 7 For Honors and advanced students, prior to the lesson, have them research and prepare a short oral biography of Evo Morales, an indigenous farmer who became President.
*Slide 16 For Honors and advanced students, prior to the lesson, have them research and prepare a short oral biography of Violeta Chamorro, Nicaragua's first female president.
*Slide 24 For Honors and advanced students, prior to the lesson, have them research and prepare a short oral biography of Eva Peron, one of the most beloved figures in Argentine history.
*Slides 25 and 26 For Honors and advanced students, prior to the lesson, have them research and prepare a short oral summaries of the U.S. Government policies put into place by John F Kennedy and Franklin D Roosevelt that help protect and shape Latin American history.
