Description

In this fun activity, students create a playlist that demonstrates their knowledge of characterization in any novel or text! This is similar to the classic mixtape assignment that you may have heard of, but I wanted to adapt it to be more relevant to modern students' lives. The design is modeled after the mobile app, so students feel like they're on Spotify when working on it!

After creating a 6 song playlist, students write responses for each choice explaining their reasoning. This response should be at least 1 paragraph long, but can be expanded to suit upper grade levels or more advanced writing students.

I have used this assignment in 7th, 8th and 10th grade classes. It can be easily adapted to any 5-12 grade level.

Assign with Google Classroom or print & distribute! This product comes with a black & white PDF ready for students to write in by hand if needed.

Included:

Fill-in Google Slides:

  • Directions Page
  • 6 Song Spotify Playlist Page
  • 3 Response Pages

Note: These Google Slides have editable text boxes, but the overall design and elements are locked.

Black & White Printable PDF

  • Directions Page
  • 6 Song Spotify Playlist
  • Response Page (print multiple copies of this one!)

My students deemed this activity as "actually fun" when compare to other ELA work. It was great for them to draw on the songs they love to think more deeply about characters.
