Description
These centers were created for my first grade students, but would also work well for advanced kindergarten students or as extra review for some 2nd graders. These activities could be played in small group with the teacher, in a designated area around the room, or at student tables. Many of them could also be used as "Write the Room" where students move around to find the task cards.
Each center comes in color and black/white and includes a direction sheet and recording page for accountability. I've also included an answer key for quick assessment to make sure students are able to complete the stations independently.
Literacy Centers
Scrambled Sentences
Students will match 6 cards up to build simple sentences. After each sentence is completed, they will write them on their recording sheet. The following sentences are included:
- There are eggs in that bush.
- When will the Easter Bunny come?
- I really like those bunny ears!
- My basket is full of eggs.
- I hope these eggs have candy.
Some Bunny Ate the Blends
Students will determine the missing initial blend and write the word on their recording page. Because this center uses simple pictures, it is great for Write the Room or a Scoot activity. The following words are included: blocks, broom, clip, crown, drill, fly, frog, glow, graph, play, scale, skunk, slice, smoke, snake, spy, stick, trash.
Bossy R Baskets
In this 2 part center, students will match the picture to the r-controlled vowel word. After students have matched all the pictures, they will sort the words by their vowel and write them on their recording page. The following words are included:
- AR-star, shark, scar, car
- ER-flower, quarter, spider, shower
- IR-bird, shirt, thirsty, girl
- OR-score, snore, corn, thorn
Wacky Wabbit
Students will read silent-e words and determine if they are real or nonsense. They will record the words as they read them.
- Real Words-lake, bike, cone, cube, made, rice, rope, tune, ate
- Nonsense Words-nade, zite, coge, bume, vupe, sipe, woje, tupe, gute
Sight Word Scramble
Using the word bank (or your word wall) students will unscramble words from common 1st grade word lists. They should record the words as they solve them and then create their own scrambled sight word. Because this center uses simple pictures, it is great for Write the Room or a Scoot activity. The following sight words are included: where, after, could, again, just, before, once, over, some, always, first, many, their, there, would.
Math Centers
Good and Bad Eggs
Students will read number comparisons and determine if they are true or false. As they sort the eggs they should record them on their sheet. Finally, students will correct the "bad" eggs so that they show a true comparison. Both sets have 3 greater than (>), 3 less than (<), and 3 equal (=) comparisons. Numbers 1-99 are used, except for 101=101.
Time for Easter
Students will read 12 clocks showing time to the hour and half hour. Then they will write the time on their recording sheet. Because this center uses simple pictures, it is great for Write the Room or a Scoot activity.
Fact Family Fun
Students will match the letter to the recording sheet and write the fact family (4 number sentences) for each set of numbers. Because this center uses simple letter matching, it is great for Write the Room or a Scoot activity. The following fact families are included:
4, 8, 12
3, 6, 9
7, 3, 10
5, 6, 11
4, 4, 8
9, 1, 10
Going on a Coin Hunt
Students will count small sets of unlike coins and record the total on their recording sheet. To support students as they practice counting change, the coins are arranged largest to smallest in value. Sets do not include more than 3 types of coins. Because this center uses simple pictures, it is great for Write the Room or a Scoot activity. This center includes quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
Basket of Sums
Students will sort number sentences by their sum and record their answers. This center builds fact fluency as students practice sums of 10, 11, 12, and 13.
The preview for this resource includes each center's direction page. The direction pages can be placed on a ziploc bag, a plastic tub, or in a sheet protector for easy student use.
