Spring Mystery Math Hunt โ€” An Eggsellent Adventure in Sixth Grade Math!

Looking for a way to bring energy, movement, and real-world problem solving into your sixth grade math classroom this spring? Look no further than the Spring Mystery Math Hunt โ€” an engaging, spring-themed pod hunt that will have your students solving, searching, and hopefully smiling!

What It Is:
Students participate in a hands-on โ€œpod huntโ€ (like an Easter egg hunt โ€” but with purpose!), where they search for hidden pods containing math questions. Each round is color-coded and revealed through a guided Google Slides slideshow (I assign on Google Classroom), keeping the pace smooth and the excitement high.

Whatโ€™s Included:

  • A variety of 6th grade mixed review word problems, aligned to Common Core
  • A student worksheet for showing all their work (this is what I collect and grade)
  • An interactive Google Slides guide that tells students which colored pod to find next
  • Multiple choice answer checks on the slides, so students get instant feedback and can self-correct before moving on (but I still make my students show their work ;-)

Why I Love It As A Teacher:

  • Encourages movement and collaboration
  • Promotes independent and social problem-solving and checking work
  • Reinforces real-world math applications
  • Perfect for review, celebration, or a spring math day before break!
  • Reusable year after year โ€” just print on card stock or laminate and youโ€™re ready to go!

โœจ Heads Up: This activity takes a little prep at the start (printing (maybe laminating) and stuffing pods), but your effort now means springtime math magic for years to come.

Make math memorable this season with the Spring Mystery Math Hunt โ€” your students wonโ€™t even realize how much theyโ€™re learning while theyโ€™re having this much fun!

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas ๐˜ = ๐˜ญ ๐˜ธ ๐˜ฉ and ๐˜ = ๐˜ฃ ๐˜ฉ to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
