Description
Student's often ask "When will I need this?" This task places students in a real world situation that requires them to use their knowledge of square roots to justify an answer. There is more than one correct answer which allows for a discussion about how in real life there is typically not just one answer.
As a teacher, it is important for me to understand what my teachers are thinking as they work through problems but there simply isn't enough time in class to listen to each student work through a problem. Having them write about their work is a great way to accomplish the same thing and "see" mathematics happening.

CCSS8.NS.A.2
Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
