Description

This product was designed with Building Thinking Classrooms in mind. These two tasks are designed for a low floor high ceiling assignment or thin sliced lesson plan. This could be used for a higher order thinking lesson on square root, cube root or a multi-step problem. This would be a great activity for a Formative Assessment and/or Exit Ticket.

Square Root Clock--Students simplify each hour and see if the clock would work.

Square Root and Cube Root--Students will estimate square roots and solve an equation. Students will place roots on a number line, students will solve a multi step problem.

Thin slicing: Copy the problems and answers back to back and cut to create the slices or use them as task cards. The problems increase in difficulty 1-15.

Know that numbers that are not rational are called irrational. Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion which repeats eventually into a rational number.
Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π²). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
