Description

This is the perfect St. Patrick's Day activity to help your students practice adding and subtracting integers while having fun in math class!

This shamrock puzzle is a self-checking activity and includes 30 pieces with 48 different questions and answers varying in difficulty. Students may work individually, in pairs, or in small groups (1-4). Each group of students receives a copy of the puzzle pieces to cut out (or you may do this step ahead of time depending on how you plan to use this in your classroom).
Pro tip: if making multiple copies, photocopy each set on a different color paper incase pieces get mixed up! Or make a different symbol/mark on the back of each set.

Students will then work through each question and search the remaining pieces for the matching answer to start putting the shamrock puzzle together! At the end, students will have created a shamrock for St. Patrick's Day!

Ideas for use:

  • Individual practice
  • Partner Practice
  • Small Group Practice
  • Math stations or Math centers
*It may be a good idea to laminate pieces ahead of time if using more than once!
  • Use as classroom decor!

Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
