Description
One thing I've been doing for a few years now is called "Starbucks Time." I recognized that sometimes my students needed to work independently, without me yapping at them, and without working with a partner. But it kind of felt wrong, like I was being lazy, you know? Then I remembered that as a college student I had to sit for extended periods of time in a coffee shop, without talking to anyone, without checking my phone, and without getting too off task when I had the whole internet at my fingertips! It was a skill and discipline I had to practice. So now I give my students their own "Starbucks Time" every so often in order to practice this skill and figure out what kind of work flow suits them best. We pretend that we're at a Starbucks where we don't know anyone, so there is no talking! I check in with them after about 15 minutes, but they appreciate the time being treated like an adult.
