This is a full NJSLA-aligned paired fiction text practice test that I made to prepare my students a bit (can be used for 3rd and 5th, geared towards 4th), featuring two engaging, high-interest passages-"Into the Game" and "The Secret Lab". It includes 10 rigorous multiple-choice questions covering theme, main idea, context clues, inference, text structure, and character analysis, plus an evidence-based writing prompt requiring students to compare both characters’ growth. A complete answer key is included, along with sample student essays scored from 0–4 with explanations for why the samples were scored the way they were scored, this is to model expectations and support writing instruction.
