Description

I teach statistics by spiraling it throughout the year. After each unit test or benchmark, students analyze their own assessment data through a statistical lens, which helps students to understand statistics in a way that is incredibly relevant and engaging. It feeds their natural curiosity because they want to discover how the class performed on that recent test, and they get hooked on the statistics. These activities are designed to encourage critical thinking as well as reflection on students' own learning while also developing important literacy skills. Statistical Analyses can be completed individually, in small groups, or as a class-wide mini-lesson.

Not only do the students benefit from these activities, but so do teachers. This is multi-functional data analysis! The statistical analysis outlined in each template that students use to reflect on their own learning is the same data analysis that will help you to reflect on your teaching. To assist in your personal analysis, I have added an additional worksheet to help you get the most out of your data. You can even turn it in to your CF/IF/AP as evidence of data driven instruction!

This bundle includes the 5 main statistical analysis templates as well as the bonus statistical analysis #6, which fits nicely between #4 and 5 or after #5. When used together, these templates help to scaffold the majority of the 6th grade statistics standards, while also incorporating several 7th grade and math I statistics standards. I have used these for teaching 6th grade, 7th grade, and math I. They are especially great for academically gifted middle grades students and/or review for high school students.

Each Statistical Analysis is customizable for your students' data, and are appropriate for grades 6-9. The open-ended nature of the tasks naturally allows students to differentiate by complexity. While the standards listed are the only ones explicitly taught through the templates, I encourage you to use the statistical analysis activities as a spring board to discuss and teach any other statistics standards you see fit.
