Description
This card sort activity is perfect for helping students practice identifying, writing, and understanding statistical questions. The set of 18 cards includes a variety of questions, from simple to complex, that will challenge students to think critically about data. This resource can be used as a card sort or a task card activity.
Cards Sort: This can be done in pairs or groups.
- Print and cut out the 18 cards.
- Have students sort the cards into two piles: statistical questions and non-statistical questions.
- Discuss the reasons why each question is either statistical or non-statistical.
- Use the cards as a formative assessment to gauge students' understanding of statistical questions.
Task Cards: This can be done individually or in groups. Students read each card and write their answer on a recording sheet provided. They also rewrite the non-statistical questions to make them statistical.
- Print and cut out the 18 cards.
- Have students record on the provided recording sheet whether the questions are statistical or non-statistical.
- For non-statistical questions, students write a new question to make it statistical.
- Use the recording sheet answers to gauge students' understanding of statistical questions.
An answer key is included as well as the rationale for each question.
