Description
Launch student interest with this math task focused on the latest trend in math performance tasks. Students will demonstrate competency in two areas: statistics proficiency with relative frequency, and geometry skills with area, volume, and capacity. Students will develop, describe, and create a frequency table and then calculate the relative frequency of the statistical winner. Students will then calculate a room's area to determine volume and capacity. With six low-prep versions of the task, your students will soon be confident and competent in using statistics & geometry to find real-world solutions.

Rocket Town Statistics & Geometry Math Performance Task (6 versions)
Rocket Town Statistics & Geometry Answer Key (6 versions)
Two Student Samples
The Rocket Town Statistics & Geometry Math Performance Task will equip students for real-life math applications while also preparing them for standardized testing. This task has a multitude of utilizations. There are six versions of the task, each version has the same context but different numbers. These tasks are perfect for collaborative class activities, individual proficiency practice, homework assignments, quizzes, or end-of-unit assessments.
Students become successful as they become more familiar with math applications! Give your students version A-D and let them work collaboratively. Once they have mastered the concepts, give version E as a quiz to prepare them for the end-of-unit assessment. Use version F as a spiral review before standardized testing. There is no better feeling than looking at a test and knowing that you know it!
This task gives students an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of statistics and geometry concepts while finding real-world solutions. Students will organize raw data, create a frequency table, develop a method for analyzing the data, find the relative frequency of their solution, and draw conclusions based on their calculations. Students will then use their understanding of factoring, unit conversion, perimeter, area, and volume to find the functional capacity of a room. Students will exhibit competence with math content standards 6.SP.5, 6.RP.3, 6.G.2, 6.NS.2, and mathematical practice standards MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, and MP6.
