Stem and Leaf Plot and Bar Graph Mini Project

A fun way to actively engage students in learning.

Students can be assigned to work individually or in small groups.

Each individual / group randomly selects a project card and follows the directions to complete dot plots, bar graphs, and Stem and leaf plots. In most cases students will use rulers to draw their own charts, graphs, and plots. However, prepared worksheets have been provided as a modification for struggling students or if instructional time is limited.

note: The in class mini project cards require that the students survey 20 people or measure. The home project cards have students surveying or measuring 100 people.

note: I recommend having students put their finished projects on construction paper.

Once students have correctly completed their graphs and plots they should be given stretch cards that require analysis of the data.

Level 1: Students complete a table by converting the data to fractions and percent.

Level 2: Students analyze the data to find the mean, median, mode range, lower quartile, upper quartile, and interquartile range.

At each level, students are also expected to create accurate and inaccurate statements about the data.
