Strategies for Adding and Subtracting Multi-Digit Whole Numbers (Lesson Package)
Share

Description

This package includes three lesson plans focusing on using three strategies for solving addition and subtractions problems:

· Using place value

· Using the commutative and associative properties

· Using the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Each lesson plan uses animation as the springboard into an activity. While I include the Mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE), all lessons are written to be used with matching state and national standards that include real-world applications.

The first lesson is for introducing using three strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems with multi-digit numbers. It includes a graphic organizer, practice with a gallery walk for peer review, and a concluding discussion. The second lesson focuses on practicing solving these types of problems using the three strategies focusing on careers. The collaborative activity includes 40 high-interest careers, a presentation component, and a concluding discussion. It includes a PowerPoint with the presentation’s expectations. The third lesson focuses on quickly practicing using two of the three strategies (the two properties and the relationship) in a student-centered activity. The activity is designed to be easily repeated throughout the school year for continued practice. Over 160 additional practice problems are included in the package!

Mathematics Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) Targeted:

3.PAR.2 Use part-whole strategies to represent and solve real-life problems involving addition and subtraction with whole numbers up to 10,000.

4.NR.2 Using part-whole strategies, solve problems involving addition and subtraction through the hundred-thousands place, as well as multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers presented in real-life, mathematical situations.

5.NR.1: Use place value understanding to solve real-life, mathematical problems.

5.NR.5: Write, interpret, and evaluate numerical expressions within authentic problems.
