Description

Bring real-world problem-solving into your construction or agriculture classroom with this engaging, hands-on activity! Students will practice calculating structural loads (dead, live, dynamic, seismic and wind) using two authentic ag-related building scenarios:

Scenario #1 – County Fair Storage Barn
A one-story barn used for storing hay and small equipment. Students calculate all major load types, then reflect on how design choices and intended use affect the structure.

Scenario #2 – Ag Extension Office Building
A three-story office at the county fairgrounds. Students calculate complex multi-story loads, including dynamic HVAC impact and seismic base shear. Reflection questions push students to think critically about how loads affect building safety and design.

What’s Included:

  • Student Worksheets (Blank Versions):
Clean worksheets with calculation spaces for students to show their work.
  • Modified Worksheets (Guided Layouts):
Support learners who need additional scaffolding with easier calculations and extra cues.
  • Teacher Answer Keys
  • Reflection Questions & Answer Key:
Scenario-specific and general reflection prompts to extend learning, with sample answers provided.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Real-world agricultural construction applications
  • Two differentiated versions (regular + modified) for flexible use
  • Ready-to-print worksheets and keys save you prep time
  • Encourages both calculation skills and critical thinking

Best For:

  • High school construction, agriculture, or engineering classes
  • Junior/senior level CTE programs
  • Teachers looking for applied math/physics integration in ag settings

Give your students the chance to think like real builders and engineers while applying classroom math to authentic agricultural structures!
