Description

Students learn to utilize the steps of the scientific method to answer a question they derive from a list of materials. I have found that students do not have issues with performing "recipe" labs, but when asked to come up with their own questions and designing experiments to find answers to those questions, they are completely lost.

This experiment involves very inexpensive materials, most already found in a regular science lab. With the addition of quick growing radish seeds to the materials list, students are allowed to come up with questions about seed germination and led to formulate hypotheses about what factors affect that germination. The worksheet walks students through the scientific method, and as a result, students learn proper lab format.
