Description

This genetics activity package comes with 3 printable handouts, matching digital worksheets, and 2 cheat sheets.

Topics Covered: Substitution Mutation, Missense, Nonsense, Silent, Gene Mutations, Chromosomal mutations, DNA base pairing, Nucleotide pairing, Stop codon, Codon Charts, DNA, mRNA, tRNA, Amino Acids, Protein Synthesis (Brief), adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine, uracil

Substitution Mutations Description

These activities are based on Bloom`s Taxonomy and work their way up in difficulty. Visual aids are used to helps students answer the questions. Two worksheets focus on nucleotide base pairing. Students will then be asked to classify the type of pairing as missense, nonsense, or silent. The last worksheet is a show your knowledge worksheet that covers the theory behind gene substitutions. The worksheet covers topics such as comparing chromosomal and gene mutations, how DNA holds information and is based on bloom's taxonomy.

Mutations-Substitution-Presentation

Students will:

  • Match Nucleotides and bases
  • Identify and differentiate between the substitutions
  • Work their way up Bloom`s Taxonomy (RECALL - DEMONSTRATE - ANALYZE)
  • Compare and contrast gene and chromosomal mutations
  • Compare the three types of substitution mutations (Silent, Missense, Nonsense)

Features

3 Digital or Printable worksheets

  • 2 Worksheets to identify and classify substitution mutations as well as pairing bases
  • 1 Show your knowledge worksheets that compare mutations types and focus on genes

2 Digital or Printable CheatSheets

  • 1 Codon Chart
  • 1 Sheet demonstrating the difference between Substitution (missense, nonsense, silent) and Frameshifts such as insertion and deletion, as well as inversion.

Online Compatible

  • All presentation slides can be added directly to Google Classroom or another LMS platform with ease
  • Worksheets can be shared with students online and they can complete them by adding their own text boxes for their responses

Bloom's Taxonomy

  • Questions are based on Bloom's Taxonomy and are meant to challenge students appropriately working upwards along with the pyramid

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSHS-LS3-1
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSHS-LS1-1
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
NGSSHS-LS3-2
Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors. Emphasis is on using data to support arguments for the way variation occurs. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
