Description

Read each story problem aloud. Have students solve the story problems by counting up to subtract and/or by regrouping and subtracting. Students may draw tens sticks and ones cubes on their personal whiteboards to show their work or they may use real ten sticks and ones cubes. Then have students write equations to show how they solved (addition or subtraction). The first few problems do not require regrouping. As problems get harder, encourage students to regroup and show how they did so. Once students have solved, have them share how they solved with their neighbor. Then, Flip to the next slide that shows ten sticks and ones cubes and have a volunteer come up and show how they solved. For the problems that require regrouping, the slides walk students through the process. Optional: flip to the answer slide so students can check their work. There is an answer slide that also shows the vertical equation.
