Description
This 11 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to subtract using a variety of strategies. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 6.6 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students are given a subtraction problem using visual manipulatives (horses, in this case). The student can manipulate and use the "cross out" method or other techniques that the teacher has been using to teach subtraction. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: subtraction, take away, difference, minus sign, then opens for a review on the different ways students have been taught to subtract. The next slide gives examples on ways to subtract (i.e. count back, number line, etc), after the students have brainstormed. The next several slides allows students to interactively practice each subtraction strategy. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page allows one last class problem for review and closure which students can discuss which strategy they like the best, and then leads into a higher order thinking question. The last page gives a math journal entry inviting students to write about a subtraction strategy they use and to demonstrate how they use it.
*Note on the "drawing picture" strategy, students may draw their own picture on the Promethean Board, or you may choose images from the images library, as you can see, I used beach balls from the images library, but the possibilities are endless!
