Description
If you purchased my addition facts center prior to November 1, 2019, you already bought this product. Follow the link at the bottom of this description and see if the "You Own It!" alert is displayed. You could also check your "My Purchases" folder on TpT.
This subtraction math center will help students review a random group of facts. It is also intended to improve speed and accuracy with mental subtraction using basic facts that were previously taught by the teacher. The minuends for the subtraction facts range from 0 to 20. The challenge worksheet exceeds the number 20 as the subtrahends.
There are 12 color "houses" and a matching 12 black and white "houses" for subtraction. There are also a reduced sized versions of the houses. Students solve subtraction facts horizontally or vertically. They use the numeral cards provided to work through the problems presented on the "houses".
Each "house" contains numbers which students will use as the minuends or subtrahends. Students can use mental subtraction or memorization skills to arrive at the difference. They then find the numeral card which is the answer to the math fact and adhere it to the "house" with a VELCRO® coin. (Each "house" has its own set of numeral cards which are color coded to match the appropriate "house".)
Student recording sheets which match the centers are included. These can be used as a pre-assessment before staging the center. The subtraction booklets can be assembled and used as the student accountability piece. There are 12 pages in the booklets plus a 13th page for the cover. All math problems in the booklets match the centers. There is also a challenge page for subtraction facts with larger numbers. The higher order thinking activity allows students to write the numerals for thought up equations creating their own subtraction "houses".
Additional Information:
This product should not be viewed as a resource to cover every subtraction fact. The center is designed as an activity for early finishers or to be used as math learning stations within the classroom. This product would also be great for a school wide "Math Night" event.
Preparation:
This resource involves considerable preparation which includes printing, cutting, laminating, cutting again, and mounting fasteners. Detailed directions are included in the packet. There is also a link to a video with information about mounting the fasteners to the "houses".
Materials Needed:
cardstock paper
laminating film
scissors
OPTIONAL - 60 pairs of VELCRO® coins (The center can work without them.)
Common Core State Standards:
This resource partially meets the Common Core State Standards under first and second grade's Operations and Algebraic Thinking. It targets the subtraction component for 1.OA.6. which is to add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. It also targets the subtraction component of 2.OA.2 which is to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies and by the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
The National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers are acknowledged as the sole owners and developers of the Common Core State Standards, and no claims to the contrary are made.
