Description

Looking for new and fun ways to practice subtraction within 10? Here’s a set of 24 riddle task cards and activities for enrichment and challenge in kindergarten and first grade math!

Here's how these cards work:

On each of the 24 riddle task cards, your students will use subtraction skills and critical thinking to eliminate three of the given four numbers. The number that's left is Mr. Skunk's Secret Number. With each riddle card they complete, your students will complete three subtraction number models. They'll have a great time and won’t even realize that they’ve completed 72 subtraction problems in all!

Here's what's included:

* 24 riddle cards, printable at four per page

* The same 24 riddles in full page format

* Student recording page

* Answer key

* Themed number lines for extra support

* Four in a row subtraction game

Here are some ways that you can use the task cards in your classroom:

* Use in a math center or math tub for individual or partner work.

* Use the full page format with your document camera for whole class review or to focus attention at the beginning of a math lesson. Great for a quick number talk!

* Use as a skills review rotation (aka "Scoot"), individually or with partners, with students moving to stations around the classroom to solve the clues.

* Use for morning “bell ringers”.

* Use as challenge work or for fast finishers.

* Use as an activity with classroom volunteers – they can complete as few or as many as time allows!

Here's what teachers like you have said about Mr. Skunk's Secret Number:

Sonya said, "Really fun challenge for my students who needed something beyond the curriculum!"

Melissa said, "I used this resource as a fun way to hit subtraction in our class Google Meets and the students loved it!"

We are still in a distance learning classroom, so I used these cards in a virtual write the room activity. Because there are 24 cards, I used only half of them for the first activity. They were perfect for reviewing subtraction in an engaging way! Each card has four subtraction facts, three that have to be eliminated, so the students got LOTS of practice with subtraction and also with problem solving! My first grade students love puzzles and mysteries, so this was the perfect kind of activity to keep them dialed into math! Thank you! Jennifer

Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
