Use this PowerPoint to both introduce and practice the Somebody Wanted But So Then Strategy. Copy the printables that accompany the lesson so students can fully engage in the lesson!

- 1 fiction passage (printable version included) to practice the strategy included throughout the PowerPoint
- Opportunities to practice each question of the strategy - After each question (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then) of the SWBST strategy, the focus will be on finding the evidence to answer each question by re-reading and highlighting evidence with the corresponding colors in the PowerPoint. (Highlighter colors are pink, blue, orange, yellow, green if you want to provide them ahead of time to students) Answer keys provided for highlighting.
- Opportunities to practice writing a complete summary - Once the evidence is highlighted, it will be added to the SWBST chart. I love using the "carousel" strategy to get students talking and moving around the room. They enjoy working with partners to complete the work, and get to put all their thoughts together while completing the carousel. At the end, students will create a complete summary and read it together. The great thing is this activity can be done with any passage, but one is included in the resource. This activity would be a great way to wrap up a Summarizing Unit!
