Description

Summer Camp Math Mystery Activity - 3rd Grade Math Edition: The Case of the Missing Campers!

Easy prep, fun to solve! Lots of math review and deductive reasoning are involved!

The mystery worksheets are printable and digital with Google Slides.

Distance Learning: The Google Slides worksheet option link isprovided within the Teacher Instructions section of the PDF activity file.⭐

Ideal for a fun summer spiral math review session!

Students must use their math skills to unlock clues. Then, use their powers of deduction to narrow down the list of places to find and rescue the missing campers! (Don't worry the ending isn't dark or sad.)

Suggestion: Pace the clues one by one to keep the class at the same point. If using the clues in a different order, keep the suspect list away from students until all five clues are completed and discovered.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VIDEOS

  • A video hook sets the stage for engagement (check it out in the preview section).
  • After your students solve the case, an ending video is provided to wrap up the activity.
  • The videos in this pack have voiceovers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Preparation

- Print the student pages, staple or place them in a folder, and your students are set to go.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.

- Digital: Make a copy for each student when assigning via Google Classroom. They will need to be in 'edit mode' to enter their answers into the boxes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Addition within 1,000
  • Clue 2: Fraction Models
  • Clue 3: Multiplication and Division
  • Clue 4: Subtraction within 1,000
  • Clue 5: Price Lists - Adding Money

Students must use critical thinking skills to figure out what the clue is telling them to eliminate from the list of possibilities. This is a great opportunity for a class/group discussion if there is ever a dispute in the deductive reasoning process.

Also included:

  • Printable awards
  • Answer key
  • Editable list of places

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format, as well as how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

I'm using this for summer school for my kiddos and it has been a life saver. I've used the other mysteries throughout the school year when students need a review. It provides an opportunity to review with students as well as keep them engaging in the lesson. I will do the first few together and then allow them to work in partners, it has been great!
