Description

These 7 activities for 6th, 7th, or 8th graders relate to fun topics for summer or any time. Math clues provide mixed review as students find digits of each Mystery Year. Present the questions using PowerPoint or Google Slides, hand out the printable activity page, or assign with Easel. Students will be engaged! NOTE: For some topics the PDF resource is separate from the PPT (but both are included).

Each Mystery Year Puzzle Includes Print & Digital Options:

  • 1-page printable puzzle with 1-page answer key
  • 5 or 6 pages of Easel screens showing the introduction and the four puzzle math clues
  • 2 or more pages of Teacher Notes including step-by-step solutions, historical notes, and other teaching tips
  • 12 or more screens in PowerPoint including the introduction, math clues (same as Easel), answer screens, and extension options. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Mathematically proficient students make sense of quantities and their relationships in problem situations. They bring two complementary abilities to bear on problems involving quantitative relationships: the ability to decontextualize-to abstract a given situation and represent it symbolically and manipulate the representing symbols as if they have a life of their own, without necessarily attending to their referents-and the ability to contextualize, to pause as needed during the manipulation process in order to probe into the referents for the symbols involved. Quantitative reasoning entails habits of creating a coherent representation of the problem at hand; considering the units involved; attending to the meaning of quantities, not just how to compute them; and knowing and flexibly using different properties of operations and objects.
