Activity Breakdown:

Activity 1: Calculating the Area of Rectangles
Students begin by calculating the area of six rectangles. This activity allows them to recognize patterns among the rectangles and prepares them for the next stage of the lesson.

Activity 2: Constructing the Rectangular Prism
Using a printable net, students color, cut, fold, and assemble a rectangular prism. This hands-on approach helps students visualize how 2D shapes create 3D figures and sets the foundation for calculating surface area.

Activity 3: Matching Faces
Students compare their constructed prism to their calculated rectangle areas, identifying matching face pairs. This activity reinforces the idea that opposite faces of a prism are congruent, simplifying the surface area calculation.

Activity 4: Finding the Total Surface Area
Students use their previous calculations to find the total surface area of the prism by adding the areas of all six faces. They also explore the surface area formula (SA = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh) and discuss why it works.
