Description

Surface area of 3D shapes can be a tricky topic. But not if you pick up this no-prep lesson and activities set (digital and printable). This resource helps you to teach your students about 3D solids, and nets and how this translates into the surface area, provides you with TWO hands-on math center activities, and allows you to assess your students' understanding with differentiated performance problem-solving tasks

Lesson Portion (Digital and Printable)

Guide your students through learning with this lesson with digital transitions for step-by-step learning:

  • 2D vs. 3D
  • Area vs. Surface Area
  • What is a net?
  • Prism vs. Pyramids
  • Demonstration for how to find the surface area of a solid
  • Example cards for: 
    • Rectangular prisms
    • Cubes
    • Triangular prisms
    • Square based pyramids
    • Triangle-based pyramids

ALL of which students will have previously learned to measure area for

Practice Portion for Math Centers (Digital and Printable)

1. 3D Net Match - Before you can measure surface area, you must know each solid’s net. This activity makes a great digital or printable math center game. 

Digital and printable versions are both included.

2. Measure the Room - Give your students the opportunity to measure hands-on around the classroom or at home. Instructions, measuring template, and example included. 

Digital and printable versions are both included.

Self-Assess and Apply (Digital and Printable):

3 levels of problem-solving tasks for students to choose from (after self-assessing their level of understanding)

This assessment activity includes:

  • Three levels of problems 
    • I’m still learning, but I will give it a try
    • I’ve got this
    • I’m here for a challenge
  • Digital and printable versions
  • Answers for all levels

ALSO INCLUDED

  • A single-point rubric for embedded teacher feedback.
  • Ideas and tips for use for all learning models
  • Teacher tips for use, printing (if desired), and sending digitally
