Description
Students practice solving systems of equations with either the substitution or elimination method with this "Math Lib" Activity. Similar to a "mad" lib, students generate pieces to a story as they move throughout stations solving systems of equations.
There are 9 stations, with 9 systems of equations at each station. As a group of 3-4, students choose one card at each station to solve. Once solved, they look up their solution on the solutions card and record the information. After about 4 minutes, I have them get up and move to the next station. I typically pull the card that they chose so that each group will have a different story. By the time they have gone through all 9 stations, they will have completed their story.
Example story: "Mrs. Wilson was flying a kite, with Lady Gaga, while wearing gorilla costumes, at Busch Gardens, in the middle of the night, in a hot-air balloon, while wrestling a bear, to promote world peace." It's super silly and THEY LOVE IT! You will be able to change to teacher names in your own building.
The prep work is to print and cut the cards out, then place them around the room with their solutions cards. I printed the equations out on 2x4 inch mailing labels so I could just stick them to index cards and not have to cut cards out. I used colored index cards so each station was a different color, so that made it very easy not to get the cards mixed up.
