Description

This TOEIC lesson aims to turn worried, apprehensive students into excited, motivated ones.

The slideshow begins by diminishing fears about the exam with a guessing activity and discussion on who takes the TOEIC and why,  then with a video and quiz on FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) to familiarize students with the test.

Students will set their target score based on the score of peers in their country and age group, and then take a mini-test to see where they stand.  This will give students an idea of how many hours per week of study outside of class will be needed to reach their goal on time.  As a teacher you will be unique.  No other course calculates self-study time like this.

Your students will have a SMART Goal, one that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time based.

This lesson plan can be easily adapted for upper levels (B2&C1) or for lower levels (A2&B1). Plan for 3 to 6 hours depending on the overall level of students.

Your lesson plan includes digital and printable materials:

● 47 slides with speaker notes in PowerPoint and Google Slides, plus printable slideshow handout

● Guessing activity "4 Reasons why 6 million people take the TOEIC"

● Video with activity: Watch a 4-minute video answering TOEIC FAQs with listening comprehension task cards or a quiz. Your choice.

● Pick a target TOEIC score to aim for based on average scores for your country or region.

● Take a 45m mini-test answers provided plus test-taking strategies for Parts 1-7

● Calculate the number of study hours needed to reach target score

Higher levels B2 & C1 could finish the 47 slides in 3 hours but that would not provide much discussion time and would also mean taking the mini-test without stopping between each of the 7 parts for test-taking strategies. I suggest spending 4.5 hours for B2 levels.

Lower levels A2 & B1 will certainly need 4.5 to 6 hours to complete the 47 slides. Divide the lesson into three parts: Part I slides 1-16 1.5 hours “Who takes the TOEIC/What is the TOEIC”, Part 2 slides 16-43 3 hours “Pick a target score/Take a mini-test”, Part 3 slides 44-47 1.5 hours “Calculate and convert mini-score/calculate Number of study hours/Set a SMART goal”.
