Task Analysis Set 3--Data Collection, Visuals, Progress Reports
Share

Description

This pack includes everything you need to teach & track a student’s progress for routine skills using task analysis. Tools are included to get a baseline for pre-intervention data, teach the skill with visuals, use a schedule of reinforcement, and prepare quarterly progress reports. IEP goal suggestions also given.

Task analysis breaks down a skill into steps so students can master them and then add them together to independently perform the whole routine required in the skill. Task analysis is ideal for teaching daily living skills, school routines, and some academics, e.g., solving math problems, since they have several steps, usually done in sequence.

Methods for Teaching the Skill

Backward Chain: Assist the student with each step of task until the last step. Encourage independence and reinforce the student for doing the last step. Once that one is mastered, assist the student with all but the last two steps. When those are mastered, assist the student with all but the last three steps. Continue backwards until the student is able to complete the entire chain independently.

Forward Chain: Teach and reinforce the first step. Give assistance with the rest of the skill. When the first step is mastered, teach and reinforce the second step. Assist with the rest of the steps. Continue until the student is able to complete all steps independently.

Total Task: Teach all the steps, providing support as needed and fading support as student becomes more independent at each step. Provide a reinforcer at the end of the task to encourage continued attempts at learning the skill independently.
